2019 Podere Il Castellaccio 'Valénte'
Made from native grapes that have been overlooked due to the fame of some of Italy's most famous Super Tuscans using only international and well-known varietals. Alessandro Scappini and his wife Enrica are changing the story of Bolgheri by planting and investing in autoctonous varietals, which today make up nearly 90% of their total production. Valènte is an excellent example of the future of Bolgheri- well balanced, expressive, and above all, a wine that give a sense of place. Using Sangiovese, Pugnitello and Foglia Tonda- there are only 8000 bottles made annually.
Each varietal is fermented separately with its own indigenous yeasts in Slovenian oak barrels and with 2 weeks of skin contact. After racking, blending is carried out and the wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months and then aged further in bottle for 6-12 months.
